The Story

The Mitta River drops through a remote gorge in Victoria's high country, cutting more than sixty rapids into a nineteen-kilometre run rated Class 2 to 4. Rafting Australia has guided that stretch, plus day trips further along the Mitta Valley and multi-day descents into the Snowy Mountains' Upper Murray in Kosciuszko National Park, since 1976 — one of the longest continuously run whitewater operations in the country. The same couple who founded the business still work the river rather than handing trips to a rotating fleet of casual staff, and the season is scaled to conditions: gentler suburban Melbourne rivers such as the Yarra and Goulburn suit first-timers, while the Mitta Gorge is reserved for paddlers wanting bigger water. Custom trips run for schools, corporate groups and social outings alongside the standard departures. Flows peak from November through April, when the rapids are most reliable, and the operators note that peak-season dates fill early. For anyone heading into Victoria's alpine river country, Hinnomunjie is the place to start.
